Negombo

A brief look

The nearest attraction to the Bandaranaike International Airport is Negombo town. It is the most convenient rest stop for tired visitors who arrive in Sri Lanka for the first time. It is not a place that many people take the time to explore, maybe owing to its closeness to the airport. Negombo features some of the greatest beaches on the island's west coast. During the Dutch time, Negombo became an important location for cinnamon commerce, and the European influence is still extremely obvious today. The town contains a beautiful array of churches that represent the area's significant Catholic heritage. If you thought this seaside town was all about beaches, wait till you see the Negombo lagoon.

Negombo Beach

Negombo has a number of enthralling beaches. They are ideal for walks, swimming, children's play, and even watersports.

The Lagoon

This tidal lagoon features huge mangrove swamps that are home to a variety of aquatic birds. It is well-known for its traditional lagoon fishing.

Fishing Village

It is the second-largest open-air fish market in Sri Lanka. Hundreds of boats bring in their daily catch, and the fish are dispersed around the country.

Dutch Fort

Only the fort's eastern ramparts survive. It was built by the Portuguese and afterwards taken by the Dutch and converted into a jail by the British.

St. Mary’s Church

The church is one of the largest churches on the island, with neoclassical European and Sri Lankan architecture.

Hamilton Canal

The canal runs through Negombo and links Puttalam to Colombo. The British developed it to drain seawater from the Muthurajawela Wetlands.
