A brief look

Haputale is a beautiful alpine village tucked away in the hills. It is frequently a stopping place while visiting Horton Plains because it is located at the far southern end of the hill area. Its feature is the lush colour of tea plants stretched throughout the beautiful countryside, and the town is primarily Tamil due to the great number of tea estate employees. It is only an hour's drive from Haputale to Nuwara Eliya, the highland's main city, and there is also a lovely railway excursion. Its placement on a narrow mountain slope affords extensive views of the region, sometimes reaching all the way to the island's southern shore. The weather at Haputale is a welcome reprieve from the sweltering plains.

Haputale Lipton’s Seat

It is named after Thomas Lipton, the founder of Ceylon Tea, and is Sri Lanka's most magnificent vista. On a clear day, it provides views of seven different provinces.

Adisham Monastery

Sir Thomas Lester Villiers, a tea planter, previously owned this magnificent Benedictine abbey. It is one of the world's only 18 Sylvestrine monasteries.

Dambatenna Tea Factory

This iconic plant, built by Sir Thomas Lipton in 1890, allows visitors to see the fermenting, rolling, drying, cutting, sifting, and grading of tea.

Thangamale

It is a bird sanctuary and highland woodland with a walking track around the ridge. Glennanore Tea Estate's sanctuary area is 131 hectares and is surrounded by granite cliffs.

Dhowa Rock Temple

This 2000-year-old historic Buddhist temple in an ancient community is notable for its incomplete Buddha rock carving and Kandyan-era murals.

Pattipola

It is Sri Lanka's highest railway station and tunnel, towering 6225 feet above sea level. The train trip from Haputale to Ella is spectacular.
