Anuradhapura

A brief look

It is Sri Lanka's first ancient capital, having origins dating back to the 4th century BC. As the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, it is one of the most venerated towns in the country and the monument capital of Buddhism. Anuradhapura's remarkable collection of temples, stupas, sculptures, and stoneworks has earned the city UNESCO World Heritage Site title. There are also remnants of monasteries and palaces that date back thousands of years. It is more than simply an archaeological site; it is also the center of Sri Lankan civilisation, with a sophisticated network of reservoirs and streams created for irrigation. Anuradhapura is part of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and is home to the world's most holy tree.

The Sacred Bodhi Tree

It is the world's oldest surviving human-planted tree. It was a seedling from the original tree in India where Buddha was claimed to have acquired enlightenment.

Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba

This is the most well-known dagoba in Anuradhapura. It was established in 140 BC by King Dutugamunu and is reputed to have the largest collection of Buddha's relics.

Mihintale

Arahat Mahinda delivered the first words of Buddhism to King Devanampiyatissa from the summit of this rock, and King Devanampiyatissa converted to Buddhism on the spot.

Jetavanarama Dagoba

It was the world's third highest monument. This huge dome, built by King Mahasen, was made of 90 million bricks. Ruins of a huge monastery surround it.

Thuparama Dagoba

The earliest dagoba in Sri Lanka, it was created in the third century BC by King Devanampiyatissa to house Buddha's right collarbone. The Vatadage is its most distinguishing characteristic.

Abhayagiri Dagoba

This massive edifice, originating from the second century BC, is another stupa housing Buddha relics. Its monastery complex was the first keeper of the Tooth Relic.
